Quick Facts Mosquitoes

At the very least, mosquitoes are major annoyances, biting humans with a persistence that can be maddening, leaving itchy red welts that last for days. At their worst, the females are blood thirsty, illness and death wielding specters.
There are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes worldwide and currently 176 are found in the United States. Two hundred of the known species bite man.

Female mosquitoes consume blood so that their eggs can mature prior to laying. It serves no nutritional function. Males do not take blood meals at all. For nourishment, both male and female mosquitoes feed on plant nectars . They do this in much the same way as honeybees. Life spans vary by species. Most adult female mosquitoes live 2-3 weeks. Some species that over-winter in garages, culverts and attics can live up to about 6 months.

As much as we would probably like to rid the world of these creatures, they do support ecological environments and have a rather large place in the food chain. The larvae of mosquitoes live in water and provide food for fish and other wildlife. They also eat organic matter, helping recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem. Male and female mosquitoes pollinate all sorts of plants as they consume nectar. These insects are also an important food source for many other animals, including bats, birds, reptiles, amphibians and other insects.

What’s so bad about mosquitoes? The females transmit deadly and debilitating diseases making mosquitoes the deadliest animal in the world.

Controlling mosquito populations on your property is serious business. There are quite a few steps you can take to deter mosquitoes from coming to your property, including keeping landscapes free of debris, cutting tall grass often, pruning dense vegetation, reducing watering to prevent puddling, and getting rid of standing and stagnant water, just to name a few. You’ll still need to burn citronella candles or torches when you are out after sundown and don’t forget mosquito spray with Deet to keep them at bay. These are all great, but they will not get rid of mosquitoes, because mosquitoes migrate in from neighboring properties and their populations are ever-increasing.

Corky’s Pest Control has devised a Mosquito Control Service that works to eliminate up to 45% of the mosquitoes on a property.

  • Treatments are applied to landscape bushes, trees and shrubs, concentrating on the underside of leaves where mosquitoes most often rest (out of the sun).
  • Then areas of the structure are treated, where mosquitoes are known to frequent (shaded areas, eaves, overhangs, around windows and doors).
  • Services are scheduled once a month or more frequently in peak mosquito season (May – October).
  • We even have an “Event Service” that puts up a treatment barrier to help protect guests from annoying mosquitoes.
