Weed Control Made Simple
A weed is any plant which is growing where its not wanted.
The weeds that are most frequently encountered in Southern California include barnyardgrass, crabgrass, lovegrass, pigweed, purslane, spurge, and woodsorrel (oxalis).
The best way to chemically control weeds is to act before you see the weed (pre-emergence.) In other words, kill the seed as it sprouts! (this will not hurt your existing plants or grass). Apply once in the fall and once in the spring - typically there will be 60% to 70% control after the first application and 95% control after the second application in the spring.
Early spring is the time to apply a selective pre-emergent weed control, in combination with fertilizing, to control grass and broadleaf weeds in established turf grasses (excluding golf course putting greens), lawns and sod nurseries, landscape ornamentals, and established perennial and wildflower plantings.
Pre-Emergent:
(2 applications per year in spring & fall recommended) kills the seed as it begins to sprout; it will not kill the weed if it has already sprouted or damage plants that have already grown. Different herbicides have different usage and application requirements - be sure to read the label!
Pre-emergent weed control, when used according to the label, will provide control of the following weeds:
Barnyardgrass, Kochia, Annual Bluegrass, Lambsquarters, Carpetweed, Lovegrass, Chickweed, Panicum, Mouseear Chickweed, Pigweed, Crabgrass, Purslane, Crowfootgrass, Pusley, Wolly Cupgrass, Rescuegrass, Annual Foxtails, Shepherdspurse, Goosegrass, Signalgrass, Henbit, Persian Speedwell, Itchgrass, Sprangletop, Johnsongrass, Spurge, Junglerice, Witchgrass, Knotweed, Woodsorrel (Oxalis).
