Dampwood Termite
Dampwood termites will often be seen swarming during the fall months of September and October, like Drywood termites. They are larger than the other types of termites, about 3/4ths inch in size, and are a lighter brown color. Despite the name, they will attack any wood, although they prefer wood that has been subject to moisture and decay, especially if there is no contact with the ground. Dampwood termites often work their way upward from ground level, eventually reaching the roof rafters. They also commonly infest old logs, stumps, and dead trees. There are only two castes-soldiers and reproductives, the work of the colony is actually done by the nymphs, as there is no worker caste. A colony may have up to 4,000 individuals..
Life Cycle:
Swarming occurs in late summer and early fall, especially after early rains. Wings on the swarmers are much longer than the body, which helps tell them apart from ants. The female creates and opening in wood, the male enters, and around two weeks later about a dozen eggs are laid. A second batch of eggs is laid in the spring. Nymphs eventually emerge and become soldiers or reproductives.
