BLACK GROUND BEETLE
These beetles are a nuisance pest, occasionally found indoors and confused with cockroaches. Usually they are found outdoors under stones, logs, leaves, and other decomposing organic debris. They are attracted to lights, which is why they come into homes. They are a little over a half-inch in size, have an elongated shape, are colored black, and are most active at night. They prey upon caterpillars, grubs, larvae, earthworms, and even slugs and snails—so they can be beneficial. Despite having wings, they do not fly.

Life Cycle
In the late summer, females lay eggs in the soil. The larvae hatch out and feed, also overwintering in the soil. In the spring they become active and do more feeding, until they pupate, coming out as adult beetles in the early summer. The adults can live for 2-3 years.
