Pests Attacking Man

Green Bottle Fly

The Green Bottle fly has a metallic-looking body. They frequently infest garbage and dog feces. The larvae get into decaying meat or vegetable matter, and can infest untreated wounds. Obviously, they have the ability to spread bacteria. The adults are 3/16ths to 3/8ths inch in size. They occasionally get into buildings to overwinter. Bottle flies are related to Blowflies.

Life Cycle:

Up to 180 eggs are laid in garbage or dog feces, and hatch into larvae (maggots) which frequently infest wounds left uncovered on mammals. The larvae develop rapidly, in 2-10 days, on meat or decaying vegetable matter. The larvae eventually burrow into the soil to pupate. The adults are the usual flies attracted to fresh dog feces, completing the life cycle which can produce 4-8 generations each year.
