Deer Tick

The Deer Tick, (Western Black-legged Tick), is notorious as the host of the feared Lyme Disease spirochaetes. It is small, about 3/32nds of an inch, with a reddish-brown body. The name comes from the fact it is most commonly found on deer, but it readily crawls onto humans and can have a painful bite, in addition to spreading the disease.
Ticks frequent brush and/or grassy areas, where they cling to twigs and blades awaiting a passing potential host. They sense the presence of a host by vibrations or carbon dioxide, and when one is detected they start waving their legs hoping for a lucky catch.
Tick removal is a tricky process. A firm grasp with tweezers will usually work, although it may take a while until the tick releases its grasp. Putting a little kerosene on the tick may speed the process. Any illness following a tick bite should be reported to your physician.
