There are several types of Army Ants in Nevada, but all are fairly rare. They are a small predatory ant, well known for their nocturnal foraging raids. There is usually one long column that reaches out from the nest. Army Ants will go after animal prey, but some will also occasionally forage on seeds. The Nevada types are also found in the arid deserts of California and Mexico. Males are generally wasp-like, and females are wingless. Workers can even be blind, having no eyes.
Life Cycle:
Nests are created in the soil, usually under rocks and stones. Army Ant colonies in Nevada are small, usually with fewer than 300 individuals. The nests are moved frequently. There is a single queen, with the smallest workers tending her eggs.
